THE ANCIENT CITY OF FLORINA
The Hellenistic city of Florina is located in the southern portion of the modern city of Florina , on the terraces of the northern slope of verdant hill of Agios Panteleimon , as called by the chapel located in the area . Just below , to the east , is the former Xenia hotel , where the period 1930 - 1934 was excavated by George Anthony Keramopoullos Bakalaki part of the same city , the remains of which disappeared in the 60s during the construction of Xenia . Excavations of IZEPKA began in the early 80s with financial support mainly the Ministry of Macedonia - Thrace , while maintenance and enhancement of the archaeological site were funded by the Second and Third Community Support Framework .
The excavated archaeological site , on successive terraces , occupies an area of 8 acres of certified engraving blocks . Have revealed lots of building blocks with an EW orientation , separated by vertical streets , width 3m . , Not always straight , and the outer walls of buildings angled in them , limiting the downhill roadways . The blocks are defined by horizontal streets west width ratio , bounding and position of higher terraces . In addition to these wide streets , and there are other smaller width from 1 to 1.5 m , within blocks , which facilitated access to their homes , but also the collection of rainwater . The streets are paved with stones and some places were stone steps , retentive pavement on inclines and facilitated the rise to higher levels . In almost all homes are warehouses with large jars . The walls of the houses , width 0.40 to 0.50 m , was the height of about 1 m made handsomely landscaped with stones without accompanying material . At the entrances of houses sometimes there were stone steps reason of the difference in levels and on the sides of the room built-in benches for placement of various objects .
The population of the city should be started in the 4th century . BC as evidenced by previous pottery and ended with a fire in the early 1st century . BC However, the discovery and pottery of the 2nd millennium BC, is indicative of an establishment in the area since prehistoric times .
Stin excavation of the Hellenistic city of Florina found a large number of clay vessels of various items ( panels , jars , filters , perfume bottles , urns , lamps , etc. ) simply unpainted , with black glaze and decorated with embossed or added colors . In several of the vessels reliefs granted the same molds construction , embossed pottery from Pella , the capital of the Macedonian kingdom . There must have been but local laboratory as showing lots matrices and some seals , found in the excavation . The motifs of the vessel was raised vegetable , mythological scenes of everyday life . Dominating the battle scenes , porn and themes of the Trojan cycle , which often coincide with inscriptions. The rim has two jars owners carved their names , residence and vermilion . The stamped amphora handles from various regions of the Greek countryside ( Thassos , Kos ) and the Italian peninsula , and many currencies ( Macedonian king Philip II , Alexander III , Lysimachus , Antigonus , Philip V , Pella , Thessaloniki , Amphipolis , and Athenian silver tetradrachms new cutting 148-147 BC ) , showing extensive trade .
Several are the objects of worship , such as incense burners and clay idols of deities of Greek pantheon ( Aphrodite , Artemis , Hermes , Mother of the Gods) . The large number of textile weights shows a developed textile industry , and the large number of agricultural tools and large quantities of stored grain testify dealing with agriculture and various cottage industries ( metalworking, pottery , terracotta , etc. ) .
