PRESPA NATIONAL FOREST
The Big and the Small Prespa lakes located on the map in Triethnes borders Albania , the former Yugoslavia and Greece , is a uniquely beautiful location with ancient history . Protected by Greek , European and international conventions , and Lake Mikri Prespa is protected by the Ramsar Convention as a wetland only . In 1991 he created the Society for the Protection of Prespa with voitheiaprespes.jpg the WWF supported by the efforts of local people to reveal and protect the natural resources of their region . Prespa have joined the network NATURA 2000.
It is a secluded area because of the geography of the landscape ( surrounded by the high mountains of Deinarikon Alps and the northern Pindos folds ) , with plateau sloping from north to south , untouched natural environment , traditional villages and friendly locals . Small Prespa lake a small fjord in community Mikrolimni connects Greece with Albania . The Prespa region crosses the international mountain trail E6. The climate is mild , between Mediterranean and continental .
The Prespa National Park ( declared in 1974 ) covers 256 sq . km of which cover about 83 of the two Prespa lakes and 50 constitute the core ( Absolute Protection Zone ) . It is the largest of a total of 10 national parks of our country and include boreal forests towering limestone beech forests of oak ( oak upright ) , the " north " birch woodland plant communities, reeds , deciduous and coniferous trees , 1,400 species of plants , 1,200 species of fern , alpine meadows at an altitude . 1,800 m and the only one in Europe forest elders cedars ( juniper or psefdokyparisi ) in the path of Kula Fishermen to as an endemic species , Centaurea prespana. The flora of the park includes a small number of plant species covered under international importance . The wet meadows ( littoral areas with low vegetation hydrophilous ) is very important for the reproduction of fish and amphibians , collecting invertebrates and function as a space food waterbirds . Their existence is related to the control of the width of the reed . Previously in wet meadows grazed Prespa cattle and buffalo herds .
The fauna , reptiles and birds of the region is very rich because of the many habitats and rare ( 11 species of amphibians , 21 species of reptiles , 45 species of mammals , over 260 species of wading birds) . The Prespa Park includes 12 villages . Fishermen in the village live the protected COW dwarf height 1.10m Prespa are breeding many endangered birds ( eg pelican , White Pelican ) . Plati lives stork nest on the highest in Europe ( 950 m ) . Important the fish fauna ( 17 species of fish , carp , platikes , eels , mullet , trout , roach etc. ) because 80 % of the fish are endemic . Prespa National Forest is 45 km from the town of Florina through Pissoderi . The route is magnificent in all seasons overlooking vast verdant mountains . Located 19 km from Florina reach the position Lookout , neck , combines mountain ranges of Vernon and Varnounta where the ski Viglas - Pissoderi at altitude 1650 m After the recent Memorial synantoumai Pisoderi village at an altitude of 1350 m and then the community Antartiko . The winding road leads us through a fascinating journey facing Great Prespa, the fishing village which forms the northwestern border of Greece .
